Ok I know I am probably in the minority when it comes to waking early but it has always been a part of me. Even as a child, I loved to wake up before everyone else. As I grew older I loved it even more for different reasons.

Today my routine is very simple: I wake early, I grab some coffee or tea, I listen to the birds, and then I hit the yoga mat.

My older routine included, checking my emails and strolling on social media before the mat but I began to notice this was not serving me. It is crazy how small tweaks and pivots in your day can add up to monumental changes in your life.

Almost every day I lay on my mat outside or in my bedroom and recite a poem by Mary Oliver. The poem is “Why I wake early” by Mary Oliver. The poem is very short but it packs a punch.

How we start our day matters!!!!! Maybe for you, it is not a poem but a meditation. Maybe it is just sitting or lying in silence. We are all different in our needs for peace but the thing that no one can deny is that how we wake up sets the tone for the day. I challenge you to reflect on your own routine. Is there a tweak or pivot that you can apply? Are you honoring the day ahead as the blessing it deserves?

Why I wake early by Mary Oliver

Hello, sun in my face.
Hello, you who make the morning
and spread it over the fields
and into the faces of the tulips
and the nodding morning glories,
and into the windows of, even, the
miserable and crotchety–

best preacher that ever was,
dear star, that just happens
to be where you are in the universe
to keep us from ever-darkness,
to ease us with warm touching,
to hold us in the great hands of light–
good morning, good morning, good morning.

Watch, now, how I start the day
in happiness, in kindness.
