The cold season is upon us. This is my favorite time of year, as I love crisp, clean air and cuddles under big, fluffy blankets. However, I do not like the sneezing, coughing, and clogged noses that often accompany the season. Another thing I do not like is Big Pharma and their icky drugs. Of course there is a time and a place for this kind of medicine but if I can try and avoid taking them, I do.

Since I was a young adult I have been fascinated with holistic medicine, mostly everything herbal. I have taken a few classes on herbs and truly believe in their healing possibilities.

As in most things in life I think prevention is the best defense against the cold and flu season. Sometimes you can not avoid it and you get hit with the nasty bug but if you can strengthen your immune system you have a fighting chance.

I am a huge hot tea person so I make a habit of drinking loose-leaf herbal tea all season long. Here are a few of my favorite winter defense herbs. If you live in the US I believe Mountain Rose Herbs is the best place to buy herbs. Mountain Rose Herbs has a fantastic assortment of quality herbs that are fresh and priced well. In Portugal I buy my herbs and loose-leaf tea from Chas do Mundo The EU has some high standards for quality control so I am assured great quality when ordering from here.

My favorite herbs/teas for the cold season are:

Eucalyptus –

  1. Expectorant Properties: Eucalyptus can help loosen mucus and phlegm, making it easier to expel from the respiratory tract, which can alleviate congestion.
  2. Anti-inflammatory Effects: It has anti-inflammatory properties that may help reduce swelling in the nasal passages, making it easier to breathe.
  3. Antimicrobial Activity: Eucalyptus contains compounds that have antimicrobial properties, potentially helping to fight off the pathogens that cause respiratory infections.
  4. Aromatherapy Benefits: Inhaling eucalyptus steam can provide relief by opening up the sinuses and reducing stuffiness, which can be soothing during a cold.
  5. Pain Relief: Some people find that eucalyptus can help relieve headaches and body aches associated with colds.

I like to use eucalyptus leaves to make tea but I also love love love to diffuse a good quality eucalyptus essential oil.

Peppermint:

  1. Antimicrobial Properties: Peppermint contains menthol, which has antimicrobial properties that can help fight off germs and reduce the severity of cold symptoms.
  2. Decongestant Effects: The menthol in peppermint can act as a natural decongestant, helping to soothe and open up the nasal passages, making it easier to breathe.
  3. ** soothing sore throat**: The warm liquid of peppermint tea can help soothe a sore throat and reduce irritation.
  4. Relaxation and Comfort: Drinking warm tea is comforting and can help relax the body, which may aid in recovery from illness.

Loose-leaf peppermint tea is the balm BUT you must buy a good quality tea. Do not waste your money on grocery store tea bags. Peppermint tea is also good when you have a tummy ache.

Licorice Root:

  1. Anti-inflammatory Properties: Licorice root contains compounds that can help reduce inflammation in the throat, providing some relief from irritation and pain.
  2. Antiviral and Antibacterial Effects: It has natural antiviral and antibacterial properties, which can help combat infections that may be causing the sore throat.
  3. Soothing Properties: Licorice root can help soothe the mucous membranes in the throat, reducing discomfort and promoting healing.
  4. Natural Cough Suppressant: It may also act as a cough suppressant, which can be helpful if coughing is contributing to throat irritation.
  5. Immune Support: Licorice root can support the immune system, helping the body fight off infections more effectively.

However, it’s important to use licorice root in moderation and consult with a healthcare professional, especially for individuals with certain health conditions or those who are pregnant.

Thyme:

  1. Antimicrobial Properties: Thyme contains thymol, which has antimicrobial properties that can help fight off cold viruses and bacteria.
  2. Expectorant Effects: It can help clear mucus from the respiratory tract, making it easier to breathe and relieving coughing.
  3. Anti-inflammatory: Thyme has anti-inflammatory properties that may reduce throat irritation and inflammation associated with colds.
  4. Rich in Antioxidants: Thyme is packed with antioxidants, which can help support the immune system during illness.
  5. Soothing Aroma: The aroma of thyme can also help open up sinuses and ease congestion when inhaled, especially when used in teas or steam inhalations.

I like to make a thyme steam bath when I feel congested. Here is a great video on how to make one. PS: keep your eyes closed when doing this bath :-)

Arm yourself this season and do not let the cold bug get you down. Herbs can be magical.
