I used to spend so dang much money on those little wellness shots you can buy at the grocery store. They were yummy no doubt but they were expensive and I hated that I was wasting so much plastic. Now I make my own and it could not be easier. I can control what ingredients I use and refill them using cute little glass jars I purchased on Amazon. My favorite way to make them is using canned unsweetened pineapple, lemon, turmeric, ginger, cayenne pepper, pepper, and water. These shots of wellness are no joke and are a fantastic way to treat your body to some immune-strengthening health. Here are some quick facts for your days reading :-)
Turmeric is a bright yellow spice from the Curcuma longa plant, and it packs a punch when it comes to health benefits, mainly thanks to its key ingredient, curcumin. Beware of the bright yellow, though; it stains everything. I use th. back of a spoon to peel my turmeric and ginger root. If you buy organic, you do not need to peel it. The back-of-the-spoon method seems the easiest to me. There is a lot of science out there suggesting you always add a little black pepper to your turmeric. The black pepper helps activate the turmeric. I have no idea if it is true or not lol but I always add it.
- Reduces Inflammation: Curcumin is known to fight inflammation, which can be great for those dealing with issues like arthritis.
- Powerful Antioxidant: Turmeric helps tackle oxidative stress and free radicals, which can lower the risk of chronic diseases.
- Good for Heart Health: It might boost heart health by improving blood vessel function and reducing inflammation—both key for a healthy heart.
- Boosts Brain Function: Some research shows that curcumin can increase levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which can help improve memory and cognitive health and might lower the chances of neurodegenerative diseases.
- Aids Digestion: Turmeric is helpful for digestion and can assist with gut issues like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
- Joint Health Support: Thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties, turmeric is often used to relieve joint pain, making it popular for people with arthritis.
Ginger root is a fantastic thing to use in your wellness shots because it comes with a bunch of great health benefits! Here are some of the perks:
- Anti-Inflammatory Magic: Ginger is packed with gingerol, which has powerful anti-inflammatory properties. This can help soothe inflammation in your body.
- Digestive Buddy: If you ever feel bloated or gassy, ginger might be just what you need. It’s known to help reduce nausea, whether from motion sickness or morning sickness during pregnancy.
- Pain Relief: Whether it’s sore muscles after a workout or joint pain from arthritis, ginger might help ease that discomfort.
- Immune Booster: With its antioxidant properties, ginger can give your immune system a nice little boost, helping you fend off those pesky colds and infections.
- Heart Helper: Some studies suggest that ginger could help lower cholesterol levels and improve circulation, which is great for your heart health.
- Blood Sugar Support: Ginger may also assist in improving insulin sensitivity and lowering blood sugar levels—something particularly beneficial for folks with type 2 diabetes.
- Menstrual Cramp Reliever: Many women find that ginger helps lessen the pain of menstrual cramps when taken at the start of their periods.
- Respiratory Relief: Feeling congested? Ginger can act as a natural expectorant, helping you clear out mucus and phlegm from your respiratory system.
Ginger root is a staple in our house. I do not use it a lot in cooking but I love to make these wellness shots and ginger all with fresh ginger root. I love the zing of fresh ginger.
Wellness Shot
Equipment
- High Speed Blender
- 6 Little Glass Jars
Ingredients
- 1 whole Lemon, flesh only, no white pith
- 5-10 cm Tumeric root peeled and cut (2-4 inches )
- 5-10 cm Ginger root peeled and cut ( 2-4 inches )
- 200 grams Tinned unsweetened pineapple 1 can or 1 cup drained or not drained is fine
- 400 grams Water 1 3/4 cups, do 1 1/2 cups if you don't drain the pineapple
- 1 pinch Cayenne pepper
- 1 pinch Black pepper
Instructions
- Place all of your ingredients into your blender and blend on high for 1-2 minutes.
- Pour your liquid into little glass jars. I have found the perfect shot size is 90 grams. ( 3.5 ounce ) Make sure you shake them before you drink them because sometimes bits and pieces settle at the bottom of the jar.
- I keep them in the refrigerator and use them within one week.
If you are in America, these are the jars I use from Amazon. If you are in Europe, these are the jars I use from Amazon.es. You could also skip the little jar thing and just put the liquid in a pitcher but heck it just isn’t as cute :-)

Can’t wait to try this! I’ve never seen turmeric root in Bismarck, ND!
;-D. I’ll have to go check my local Asian market.
Great idea!!! It is usually next to the ginger root.
I made this yesterday!

First of all, I’ve NEVER peeled a lemon before, so it was fun to learn that once you get the major peel off (I saved the zest for a future use first), the minority of the pith comes off quite easily if you start from one of the ends to which all the little threads are connected. Ginger is fairly new to me and I know fresh ginger slaps me in the face, so I used only ~1”. I hadn’t gotten to the Asian market to look for turmeric root, so just used the powder I had on hand; ~1tsp. I may up that next time.
This “juice” has a fresh, zingy taste to jolt me into the day and say, “Let’s Go.”
Thanks, Judy, for sharing your recipes and life journey with us.
OMG you are so cute, “Slaps me in the face” I am so glad you tried it. I have been making it and freezing it in ice cube trays for hot tea in the AM. I am being really good and having it before my coffee. It is a struggle sometimes, I must admit lol
