Are New Year’s Resolutions Effective? Hmmmmmm I think it depends but lets chat about it.

This is such a personal question but one I play with in my mind every year.

As the New Year rolls around, many of us dust off our goals and resolutions—hoping to usher in a better version of ourselves. But let’s take a moment to consider: are these resolutions really effective? Again this is a question that is personal but I kinda wanted to just chat about it and get you thinking.

The Numbers Behind Resolutions

According to various studies, about 80% of people who make New Year’s resolutions fail by February. That sounds discouraging, doesn’t it? However, let’s dig deeper AND studies are important but more importantly, I like to hear stories from YOU so don’t forget to comment below with your experience and opinions on this topic :-)

Research by the University of Scranton found that setting specific goals can significantly increase our chances of success. For example, instead of saying, “I want to get fit,” a more specific resolution like, “I will work out for 30 minutes three times a week,” can provide a clearer path to success. Or if you are a Malone it is ” We will do Dry January” or maybe a more specific goal could be “We will drinkless in January” ( HEE HEE we are going for the big goal this year, pray for us )

What Makes Resolutions Work?

Here are a few factors that can make or break resolutions:

Accountability: Sharing your resolution with friends or joining a community can increase your commitment. When people know your goals, you’re less likely to back out! I am here if you need me. Hit reply and share with me or send me a private email. I love encouraging people.

Flexibility: Sometimes plans change, and that’s okay! Adjusting your goals as life unfolds can help you stay on track without feeling defeated. However, be mindful of the adjustment. Are you adjusting because it is hard and a habit or is life really asking you to adjust? My advice is to give it one more day before you change your goal. It is kinda like the idea of feeling you are hungry and realizing you are just thirsty.

Positive Mindset: It’s essential to approach your goals with optimism! Studies suggest that a positive mindset can lead to greater persistence. You’ve got to believe you can achieve what you set out to do! Remember that freaking subconscious is a bitch and your thoughts like to stay in their comfort zone. Create new programs for your conscious brain. This means practice, practice practice, do, do do again and again.

A Personal Touch

To make this topic relatable, let me share a quick story: Last year, I set a resolution to read more books on my kindle. I told some of my friends of my goal and they wanted to join in. This accountability gave me the push I needed! By joining up with a reading group, I finished my goal and felt fulfilled at the end of the year. If you are ever looking for a book recommendation, hit me up.

Tips for Success

If you’re thinking of setting a New Year’s resolution, here are a few tips I think you might find helpful.

1. Be Specific: Define clear, achievable targets.

2. Break It Down: Divide those big goals into smaller, manageable tasks.

3. Track Progress: Keep a journal or use an app to monitor your journey. Celebrate those small wins! One thing to be cautious about here is not to sabotage yourself. Back in the day when I had a clinical practice I would see clients celebrate those goals only to slip up the next day. I believe this is because of the energy you put into the thought. For instance if your goal was to not eat meat and you celebrate one week without meat all of a sudden all your brain thinks about is meat. Instead choose wiser words like ” I am proud of myself and I am strong.” Just keep meat out of it.

4. Stay Positive: Remind yourself why you made the resolution in the first place! I think this is such a key thing. Often, we make these grandiose goals and although they are daunting there is a big reason behind the thought. Lean on that reason and decide if it is worth it.

While the statistics on New Year’s resolutions can sound grim, the potential for success is within your reach! With the right strategy, mindset, and support system, you can make lasting changes in your life.

If you are not the type of person that needs support from family and friends, maybe keep your goals to yourself. The journey of change can be a very personal thing for many, You do You!

So, as 2025 approaches, think about what you want to achieve and go for it! Happy New Year, and may your resolutions bring you growth and joy!
