Mike and I have lived in The Algarve in Portugal for 2.5 years. At least once a month someone messages me telling me they are coming to Portugal and asks me where they should visit. I’ve put together a list of the top 5 places you absolutely must visit when exploring this stunning coastal paradise. So grab a cup of tea, sit back, and let’s dive into the wonders of the Algarve! Mike and I have been to all of these places but Ria Formosa Natural Park We have friends who have gone to this park and said it was a fantastic place to visit so I wanted to add it to the list. Below are 5 reasons you need to book that flight. Which one would you visit first?

• Praia da Marinha  
  Ranked as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, Praia da Marinha is a must-visit destination for anyone seeking sun, sand, and serenity. I am borrowing someone’s video because for some reason I did not take my phone the day we went to this beach. The day we visited it was not as crowded as this video. The beach has picture-perfect golden cliffs, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and secluded coves making this beach a true gem of the Algarve. Take a stroll along the cliffside paths for breathtaking views or relax on the soft sandy shores and let the sound of the waves lull you into a state of pure bliss. One of the things that we love about the Algarve is the cliffside. Lagos has some stunning cliffside walks as well. PS Praia means beach in Portuguese.

• Lagos  
  Steeped in history and charm, the historic town of Lagos is a delightful blend of old-world beauty and modern amenities. You can wander through the narrow cobbled streets lined with colorful buildings, visit the impressive Ponta da Piedade cliffs for panoramic views of the coastline, and don’t miss the opportunity to sample fresh seafood at one of the local restaurants. With its vibrant atmosphere and rich cultural heritage, Lagos is where Mike and I first lived when we moved to Portugal. The coastline is breathtaking. The shops, the town, the overall vibe is so A+. ( We moved because we wanted less city and more open space but we visit Lagos often and it never disappoints.

• Ria Formosa Natural Park  
  For nature lovers and birdwatching enthusiasts, a visit to the Ria Formosa Natural Park is a must. This protected area is a haven for wildlife, boasting an array of bird species, including flamingos, herons, and egrets. Explore the park’s network of lagoons, marshes, and sand dunes by boat or on foot, and marvel at the diverse ecosystem that thrives within this coastal paradise. Don’t forget your binoculars – you never know what feathered friends you might spot!
• Tavira: Tucked away in the eastern Algarve, Tavira is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. With its whitewashed buildings, historic sites, and tranquil atmosphere, Tavira is the perfect escape for those seeking a peaceful retreat. Wander through the romantic gardens of the Palácio da Galeria, cross the iconic Roman bridge, and relax on the pristine beaches of Ilha de Tavira. Tavira is a true oasis of serenity in the Algarve. The town is small and not spoken about a lot, I am not sure why. It is very close to Spain so maybe it is too far for people. It is gaining in popularity though. We love visiting Tavira because it is unique and quaint.

• Sagres  
  For a truly unforgettable experience, make your way to Sagres, a rugged and windswept town perched on the southwestern tip of Portugal. Known for its dramatic cliffs, wild coastline, and historic significance as the site of Henry the Navigator’s School of Navigation, Sagres exudes a sense of mystery and adventure. Visit the imposing Fortaleza de Sagres for panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, explore the nearby Cape St. Vincent, and bask in the raw beauty of this untamed corner of the Algarve. Sagres was one of the first places Mike and I visited once arriving in The Algarve. It has a hippie vibe that is really cool.
